Which direction is the qibla in Istanbul?
Calculated along the great circle from Sultanahmet to Makkah, the qibla is about 151–152 degrees clockwise from north. In other words it is south-east: about 28 degrees east of due south.
- Phone compass: open the compass and turn to 152°. Keep the phone away from metal objects, speakers and the TV first; compasses can drift a few degrees in hotel rooms.
- Google Qibla Finder: open qiblafinder.withgoogle.com in your phone’s browser; it draws the qibla line over the camera view.
- Using the mosques: the mihrabs of Sultanahmet’s mosques face the qibla. The mihrab wall of the Blue Mosque faces the Sea of Marmara side, to the south-east. If you can see a mosque from your window, picture where its mihrab is to double-check.
- Using the sun: as a rough check, the sun is due south at Dhuhr; the qibla is a little to its left.
Don’t worry about a few degrees; making a sincere effort to face the right way is what matters. For religious rulings, please refer to the official sources of Türkiye’s Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet).
Can I ask the hotel for a prayer mat?
Most hotels in Sultanahmet are used to Muslim guests, and asking reception for a prayer mat and the qibla direction is a normal request. Some rooms even have a small qibla marker.
- When you book on WhatsApp, mention “prayer mats and qibla direction in the room”; mats for everyone can be prepared in advance.
- Hotels may have only a few mats, so bringing your own is the safest choice. Folding travel mats take very little space.
- Large families can ask for a spacious family room or suite where everyone can pray together. See our guide for large families for room types.
- In rooms without carpet you can ask for a clean towel to put under the mat.
How do I make wudu in a hotel bathroom?
Most toilets in Türkiye have a built-in bidet spray (a small water nozzle or side tap). Foreign guests often ask about it, and it makes wudu in a hotel bathroom much easier.
- Washing feet: sitting in the shower or bathtub is the easiest way. Don’t lift your feet into the sink; hotel basins are not built for it and you could slip.
- Keep the floor dry: dry the floor with a towel after wudu; children slip easily on a wet bathroom floor.
- Slippers: if the hotel doesn’t provide them, bring your own bathroom slippers.
- Families with babies: for nappies, wipes and other essentials, see our practical tips for babies and kids.
Will I hear the adhan from the hotel?
Hotels in Sultanahmet are all very close to mosques, so you will hear the adhan clearly from your room. In summer the Fajr adhan is called around 03:30. Many families love this reminder, but light-sleeping babies may wake up.
- If your baby sleeps lightly, ask for a room at the back of the building when booking.
- The adhan marks the start of the prayer time. To see times in advance, use the monthly table in our Istanbul prayer times and sightseeing plan.
Pray in the room or at the mosque?
The great advantage of staying in Sultanahmet is that a few minutes’ walk takes you to congregational prayer at the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia or Little Hagia Sophia. For men, Jumu’ah and Tarawih there are the highlight of the trip, and these mosques have separate sections for women too.
If a prayer time comes while you are sightseeing, use the nearest mosque or prayer room; we cover suitable places for women in our guide to where to pray in Istanbul. For families coming back tired in the evening, praying Isha together at the hotel is often easiest.
