How do prayer times change through the year in Istanbul?
Istanbul lies far enough north that daylight varies by more than six hours between summer and winter. Türkiye stays on UTC+3 all year with no daylight saving, so the sun rises late in winter and Isha comes close to midnight in summer. The table shows approximate times for Sultanahmet on the 15th of each month. Use it to plan your trip; for prayer itself, take the exact daily times from Diyanet.
| Month | Fajr | Sunrise | Dhuhr | Asr | Maghrib | Isha |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 06:50 | 08:20 | 13:20 | 15:45 | 18:05 | 19:30 |

The table follows the calculation method used by Türkiye’s Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) and is rounded to five minutes. Times can shift by 20–30 minutes between the start and end of a month.
Where can I find exact prayer times?
- Diyanet’s official site: at namazvakitleri.diyanet.gov.tr, choose Türkiye and Istanbul to see daily, weekly and monthly times. Every mosque in Türkiye calls the adhan by these times.
- Mosque boards: large mosques show the day’s times on digital boards in the courtyard or at the entrance.
- Phone apps: set the calculation method to “Diyanet / Turkey”. Other methods can differ in Istanbul by a few minutes up to a quarter of an hour.
- The adhan: in Sultanahmet you hear it from many mosques at once. Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque answering each other across the square is one of the area’s finest moments.
When do the mosques close to visitors?
Mosques in Türkiye are always open for worship; only the tourist route closes. Anyone who wants to pray may enter during prayer time.
| Mosque | Tourist visits | For prayer |
|---|---|---|
| Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii) | Free; closed for about 60–90 min at each prayer, longer at Friday noon | Open at every prayer; separate women’s section |
| Hagia Sophia | Foreign visitors tour the paid upper gallery; closed from 30 min before to 90 min after Friday prayer, short pauses at other prayers | The ground-floor prayer hall is free; worshippers use a separate entrance on Sultanahmet Square |
| Little Hagia Sophia, Sokullu and neighbourhood mosques | Open between prayers; visitors wait while prayer is on | Open at every prayer, much quieter |
Hours and fees can change. Check the board at the mosque entrance and official sources on the day.
A sample Sultanahmet day that keeps every prayer
This plan is written for spring and autumn. In summer the morning prayers come earlier and the evening ones later; in winter Asr and Maghrib come close together.
- Morning (Fajr and breakfast at the hotel): pray Fajr at the hotel or a nearby mosque, then head to Hagia Sophia around 09:00, when queues and heat are lowest.
- 10:30–12:30: the Basilica Cistern or Topkapı Palace, both cool and covered, so comfortable even in summer.
- Dhuhr: pray in congregation at the Blue Mosque. While the tourist route is closed, it is the calmest time for a family to pray there. Then lunch and a short rest at the hotel.
- Between Dhuhr and Asr: visit the Blue Mosque’s visitor section; the Hippodrome and Arasta Bazaar are right next to it.
- Asr: pray at a quieter neighbourhood mosque such as Little Hagia Sophia, then walk down to the seafront or to Gülhane Park.
- Maghrib and Isha: after Maghrib, watch the lit-up mosques from the square; if the children are tired, pray Isha at the hotel.
With children, praying every prayer at a mosque can be hard. A hotel within walking distance of the mosques lets you get back in a few minutes when the time comes. See our guide to praying in your hotel and our guide to where to pray while sightseeing, including women’s prayer rooms.
How should I plan a Friday in Sultanahmet?
About half an hour before Friday noon prayer the big mosques start to fill and the square gets busy. The Hagia Sophia visitor gallery closes 30 minutes before Friday prayer and reopens about 90 minutes after it; guided tours usually do not run on Fridays.
- Spend Friday morning at the cisterns, Topkapı Palace or a museum.
- If you want to pray Jumu’ah at the Blue Mosque or Hagia Sophia, go early; the courtyards and surroundings fill with rows too.
- Family members not attending can wait in Gülhane Park or at the hotel.
- Leave mosque sightseeing for Friday afternoon or another day.
What are prayer times and the pace like during Ramadan?
According to the Diyanet calendar, Ramadan 2027 begins on 8 February and ends on 8 March. In Istanbul Fajr falls between 06:00 and 06:35 and Maghrib between 18:35 and 19:10, so the fast lasts about 12 hours. Because it falls at the end of winter, sightseeing while fasting is far easier than in a summer Ramadan.
- Put museums and mosques in the morning and around midday; rest at the hotel after Asr.
- Restaurants fill up at iftar time. Book a table or break your fast near your hotel.
- Tarawih at the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia is very crowded; go early with children or choose a smaller neighbourhood mosque.
