What is a panorama, and what is it like?
A panorama is a form of storytelling in which the viewer looks out from a central platform at a painting that surrounds them and feels part of the scene. At Panorama 1453, the painting under the dome, about 38 metres in diameter, shows the final assault on the Topkapı walls on the morning of 29 May 1453. The earth, cannonballs and pieces of wall in front of the painting are a life-size set, and the transition between painting and set is almost impossible to spot. Battle sounds and Ottoman military (mehter) music play in the background.
What else is in the museum?
On the lower floor, before you go up to the panorama hall, panels explain the preparations for the conquest, Mehmed the Conqueror’s army, the ships carried overland into the Golden Horn and the Byzantine defences. Reading this section first and then going up to the panorama makes what you see easier to understand. Topkapı Culture Park, where the museum stands, has green space and a playground.
A half-day plan with the walls
The museum is a few hundred metres from the Topkapı gate where the conquest took place. After the panorama, walking along the Topkapı section of the Istanbul land walls opposite means children see the scene from the painting in its real place. You can return to Sultanahmet on the same tram in 20 minutes.
Visiting tips
- In the panorama hall, look from the edge of the platform rather than the middle: you can see better where the 3D set blends into the painting.
- The sound can be loud; keep it short with small babies.
- Get off the T1 tram at the “Topkapı” stop; do not confuse it with “Topkapı Palace”, which is in Sultanahmet.
