Museums and palaces of the Historic Peninsula: from Topkapı to the Archaeology Museums
With museums ranging from an Ottoman palace to Byzantine mosaics, from Mesopotamian tablets to the history of Islamic science, the Historic Peninsula is an open-air museum that could fill days on its own. On this page we have gathered the area’s museums and palaces: which day each is closed, how long a visit takes, whether the Müzekart is accepted and how suitable it is for children are on each museum’s own page.
Prices change several times a year, so we do not quote figures; each page links to the official ticket website. As a general rule, the Müzekart is valid at museums run by the Ministry (Topkapı, Archaeology, Turkish and Islamic Arts, Mosaic, Hagia Irene) but not at municipal or private museums.

In which order should you visit the museums?
Topkapı Palace takes the longest (at least 3 hours) and is the busiest museum; entering at opening time shortens the queues. Hagia Irene in the same courtyard and the Istanbul Archaeology Museums at the entrance to Gülhane Park can wait for the afternoon or the next day. The Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts on Sultanahmet Square and the Mosaic Museum in the Arasta Bazaar are one-hour stops within walking distance. For a day-by-day plan, see our Historic Peninsula itinerary.
What is the Müzekart, and what do foreign visitors use?
The Müzekart is a card that gives one year of entry to museums and archaeological sites run by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism; Turkish citizens and residents of Türkiye can get it. Foreign visitors can buy the Museum Pass İstanbul, valid for a set number of days at Istanbul’s museums. For current coverage and prices see muze.gov.tr. Details: places to visit with the Müzekart.
