Do historic hamams have separate women’s sections?

In Ottoman times most large hamams were built as double hamams, with completely separate men’s and women’s sections. The tradition continues today:

  • Cağaloğlu Hamam: separate sections for women and men, with separate entrances.
  • Çemberlitaş Hamam: a double hamam with both a men’s and a women’s section.
  • Hagia Sophia Hürrem Sultan Hamam: a double hamam with two mirror-image halves, built by Mimar Sinan for Hürrem Sultan.

In the women’s sections the service is given by female attendants (natır). Some tourist hamams also offer “mixed” or “couples” options, so state clearly that you want the women’s section when booking. The history and architecture of the hamam buildings are covered separately on the historic hamam pages.

Privacy: what should I know at the hamam?

  • Peştamal: you are given a cotton wrap to cover your body. Covering up is fine in the women’s section too; you may wear your own swimsuit or burkini if you prefer.
  • Private room: many hamams offer a private basin or room for an extra fee, a good option for mothers and daughters to bathe together comfortably.
  • Scrub and foam: don’t hesitate to tell the attendant which areas you don’t want touched; it is an entirely normal request.
  • Children: most hamams have a minimum age for young children, and the heat is not suitable for babies. Ask in advance.
  • Prayer: a hamam visit can take 1–2 hours; go before a prayer time or after praying. See our prayer times and sightseeing plan.

Can I swim in a burkini?

Yes. Burkinis (haşema) are widely worn at beaches and hotel pools in Türkiye and draw no attention. You can easily buy one in Istanbul’s modest-fashion shops and large malls; see our guide to modest fashion shopping for where to go.

  • Some luxury hotel and club pools have rules on fabric; choose a pool-suitable, quick-drying burkini.
  • Busy public beaches are calmer early in the morning, especially at weekends.

Are there women-only beaches and pools in Istanbul?

Women-only public beaches are almost non-existent on Istanbul’s own shores. They are mostly on the southern and eastern coasts of the Sea of Marmara, around Yalova and Kocaeli. These are far for a day trip and may open or close by season, so check their current status before you go.

  • Women-only pool sessions: some municipal sports centres and private clubs offer women-only swimming hours. Times change by season, so ask the venue for its current schedule.
  • Hotel spas: some large hotels have women-only hours in their spa and pool. Small historic hotels in Sultanahmet rarely have pools.
  • An alternative: enjoying the sea with a seafront walk or a Bosphorus ferry ride is often the easiest option for families with children.

What should I pack for the hamam or pool?

  • A burkini or modest swimsuit and spare underwear.
  • Your own shampoo and comb; hamams usually provide soap.
  • A headscarf and easy-to-wear clothes; allow time to dry and cover your hair afterwards.
  • Water; the heat makes you thirsty.
  • Leave valuables at the hotel; hamams have lockers, but they can be small.
