Traces of early Ottoman architecture
The mosque was built about 40 years after the conquest, continuing the tradition of the early Ottoman mosques of Bursa and Edirne: a single main dome, a separate half-dome in front of the mihrab and an arcaded outer portico in front. Most of its complex, with its madrasa, soup kitchen and hamam, disappeared in the 20th century when Divanyolu was widened.
On Divanyolu
In Ottoman times Divanyolu was the ceremonial main avenue running from Topkapı Palace to Edirnekapı. The mosque stands on the same few hundred metres of this avenue as the Column of Constantine, the Çemberlitaş Hamam and the Tomb of Mahmud II.
Visiting tips
- The Nuruosmaniye Gate of the Grand Bazaar is 3 minutes away; add the mosque as a short stop before the bazaar.
