The baroque style arrives in Istanbul
Growing contacts with Europe in the 18th century brought a baroque language of curving lines, undulating cornices and acanthus leaves to Ottoman architecture. Nuruosmaniye’s horseshoe-shaped courtyard, its projecting mihrab apse and the round arches of its facade are symbols of this new style. The mosque’s name, meaning “the light of Osman”, refers to Osman III, who completed it, and to the abundance of light inside.
Its link to the Grand Bazaar
The path through the mosque courtyard leads straight to the Nuruosmaniye Gate of the Grand Bazaar; Kalpakçılar Street, lined with jewellers, starts at this gate. The complex’s library is known for its valuable manuscripts.
