The tomb’s architecture and who rests here
The tomb is in the “Empire” style of the period when Western influence on Ottoman architecture grew stronger: its octagonal body, large windows, columns and ornate iron grilles differ from classical-period tombs. Inside are the cenotaphs of Mahmud II, his son Sultan Abdülaziz, his grandson Abdülhamid II and members of the dynasty. The graveyard in the garden holds the graves of many well-known figures, among them Ziya Gökalp. Next to the tomb there is a small fountain and sebil.
Visiting etiquette
Shoes are removed when entering the tomb, visitors keep quiet and women are expected to cover their hair. Inside, a corner is usually set aside for those who wish to recite the Fatiha. The graveyard garden is a calm place to rest; it is a good break a few steps away from the bustle of Divanyolu.
Visiting tips
- The tomb is on Divanyolu between the Grand Bazaar and Sultanahmet; add it as a short stop in the middle of your walk.
- The fez and turban shapes on the gravestones in the garden show the person’s profession and the fashion of their time.
- The Column of Constantine and the Çemberlitaş Hamam are on the opposite pavement.
