From tobacco factory to university museum
The Cibali Tobacco Factory was founded in 1884 by the Régie (the Ottoman tobacco monopoly) and continued processing tobacco for many years in the Republican period. The story of the women who worked in the factory holds an important place in Istanbul’s social history. The building was restored in the 1990s and given to Kadir Has University; the restoration won a Europa Nostra award. The museum opened in 2007.
What to see
- Byzantine cistern: Beneath the foundations of the building, a brick-vaulted cistern can be visited.
- Golden Horn walls: A section of the Byzantine sea walls lies inside the building.
- Rezan Has collection: Ceramics, metalwork, glass and jewellery from Anatolia and Mesopotamia.
- Temporary exhibitions: Changing exhibitions on archaeology, history and art.
