Many families choose the return leg: a few restful days in Istanbul after Umrah also give children a happy ending to the journey.
How many days should I stay in Istanbul?
- 1 night: just to break the journey. An evening walk in Sultanahmet Square and a mosque visit the next morning are enough.
- 2–3 days (recommended): enough for prayers at Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace, the half-day Eyüp Sultan route and some rest.
- 4 days or more: add Süleymaniye, a Bosphorus ferry and the Grand Bazaar at a relaxed pace; ideal for big families and small children.
If you only have a few hours between flights, see our Istanbul layover guide, which covers leaving the airport and getting back on a short connection.
Why stay in Sultanahmet?
For Umrah travellers, Istanbul’s most meaningful places are in the historic peninsula. Staying in Sultanahmet means:
- You can reach Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque for each prayer in a few minutes.
- Eyüp Sultan is an easy tram ride away, changing at Eminönü.
- Halal food is easy to find; almost every restaurant uses halal meat.
- You can bring tired children back to the hotel to rest during the day.
For qibla, prayer mats and wudu at the hotel, see our guide to praying in your hotel room.
Spiritual stops in Istanbul for Umrah travellers
- Eyüp Sultan: the tomb of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, who hosted the Prophet (peace be upon him) in his home in Madinah; especially meaningful for travellers coming from Madinah. See our Companions’ tombs and Eyüp Sultan route.
- Hagia Sophia Mosque: the ground-floor prayer hall is free for worship. Praying one prayer in this symbol of the conquest is a wish for many families.
- The Blue Mosque: right next to your hotel, with congregational prayer at every prayer time.
- Topkapı Palace: the palace’s Sacred Relics section is the place in Istanbul that many Muslim visitors most want to see.
- Süleymaniye Mosque: Mimar Sinan’s masterpiece, with a superb Golden Horn view from its courtyard.

Practical tips for ihram, Zamzam and luggage
- Ihram: Istanbul Airport has ihram changing rooms for Umrah and Hajj travellers on both the arrivals and departures floors. For rulings on the miqat and when to enter ihram, consult Diyanet’s official sources or your Umrah organiser.
- Zamzam: carrying Zamzam containers depends on airline rules. Check your airline’s current rules before your flight home, and mention when booking that you would like to store containers at the hotel.
- Luggage storage: leave extra bags at the hotel and tour with a light bag. Ask for late check-out or early check-in when you book.
- Clothing: from November to March Istanbul is cool and wet; coming from Saudi Arabia, bring a coat and closed shoes.
- Rest: take the first day after Umrah gently and save long walks with children for day two.
How do I get from the airport to Sultanahmet?
From Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet takes about 45–75 minutes by car, depending on traffic. After Umrah you will have a lot of luggage, so a pre-booked transfer is the most comfortable choice; ask for a larger vehicle for a big family. From Sabiha Gökçen the trip can take longer in traffic. All the options are in our guide to Istanbul airport to Sultanahmet.
