History of the bridge
The first bridge linking the two shores of the Golden Horn was the wooden “Cisr-i Cedid”, built in 1845 with the support of the Valide Sultan. In later years the bridge was renewed several times; the pontoon bridge of 1912 was used until a fire in 1992 and then moved further up the Golden Horn. Today’s bascule bridge entered service in 1994. The Galata Bridge is Istanbul’s most photographed bridge and the one most featured in songs and novels.
What to do on the bridge?
- Watch the anglers: The anglers casting their lines on the upper level from morning to evening are one of Istanbul’s symbols; children love looking at the fish in the buckets.
- The view: Looking towards Eminönü you see the Süleymaniye Mosque and the New Mosque; looking towards Karaköy, the Galata Tower.
- Sunset: The minutes when the sun sets behind Süleymaniye are the bridge’s most beautiful time.
Walking the bridge with children
The bridge is about 490 metres long; walking it with children takes 10–15 minutes. The upper walkway is wide, but watch out for fishing lines and bait on the ground; keep small children away from the railings. After crossing the bridge and visiting Karaköy, you can return to Sultanahmet by tram. On the Eminönü side are the ferry piers and the Spice Bazaar.
Visiting tips
- Fishing lines can swing backwards; be careful when passing behind the anglers.
- Most restaurants on the lower level of the bridge serve alcohol; see our guide for family-friendly options.
- For a sunset photo, look towards Eminönü from the Karaköy end of the bridge.
