History of the station
The railway line linking Europe to Istanbul reached Sirkeci in 1873; the present station building was built between 1888 and 1890 by the German architect August Jasmund. Orient Express trains departing from Paris ended their journey at this station; Agatha Christie’s famous novel was also inspired by this line. The building is one of the best-known examples of the “orientalist” style that combines Ottoman and European architecture. When the Marmaray opened in 2013, trains began running through the new underground station; the historic station building is now used as a museum and event space.
The Railway Museum and waiting hall
The small Istanbul Railway Museum inside the station displays old ticket machines, station clocks, telegraph equipment, plates from the Orient Express and the belongings of railway workers. It is a short but enjoyable stop for train-loving children. The station’s historic waiting hall and restaurant also preserve their 19th-century atmosphere.
What is nearby?
The station is a 5-minute walk from Eminönü square and 7 minutes from the Spice Bazaar. Whirling dervish ceremonies are held at the Hodjapasha Culture Centre just behind it. The Sirkeci gate of Gülhane Park is also a few minutes away.
