A church, a dervish lodge, a mosque
The building was rebuilt as a monastery church in the Komnenian period of Byzantium. After 1453 it became a lodge of the Kalenderi dervishes, and in the reign of Bayezid II it was converted into a mosque. During excavation and restoration in the 1960s, frescoes depicting the life of Saint Francis of Assisi were found, counted among the oldest known images of him; these frescoes are now kept in the Istanbul Archaeology Museums.
