History and architecture of the hamam

The hamam was built to provide income for the library Mahmud I established inside Hagia Sophia. The building reflects the decorative taste of the period after the Tulip Era: in the middle of the hot room is an octagonal navel stone surrounded by marble basins, and the dome is carried on columns and arches. The women’s and men’s sections are set at right angles to each other and completely separated, with doors opening onto different streets. It was renewed in a restoration in the 2010s.

Visitor information

The hamam offers scrub, foam wash and massage packages; women are attended by female staff. The fact that the women’s entrance is on a separate street is reassuring for families who value privacy. For more on hamam etiquette and women-only sections, see our guide hamams and pools for women.

What is nearby?

The hamam is on the Cağaloğlu slope between Sultanahmet and Sirkeci. Hagia Sophia and the Basilica Cistern are 5 minutes’ walk away, and Gülhane Park 7 minutes.

Visiting tips

  • The women’s entrance is on a different street; follow the signs.
  • Book in advance in busy periods.
  • After the hamam you can cool down with a short walk in Gülhane Park.
