The story of Gülhane Park

In the Ottoman period, “Gülhane” (rose house) was the name given to part of the walled outer garden of Topkapı Palace. In 1839 the Tanzimat Edict was read out here, which is why it is known as the “Edict of Gülhane”. The garden opened to the public as a park in 1912, under Istanbul mayor Cemil Topuzlu. At the corner of the park on the Sultanahmet side stands the Alay Köşkü, the pavilion from which sultans watched ceremonies at the Sublime Porte.

What is in the park?

Gülhane Park with children

Gülhane is one of the few places in Sultanahmet where children can run and you can sit on the grass. The tree-lined main path is level and shady, easy to walk with a stroller. The park has toilets, drinking fountains and kiosks. An hour’s rest here after visiting Topkapı Palace or the Archaeology Museums is the best break for tired children. We have collected other things to do with children in Sultanahmet in our guide things to do with kids.

Visiting tips

  • When you leave Topkapı Palace, you can walk down Soğukçeşme Street and enter the park.
  • During the Tulip Festival (April) weekends are very crowded; choose weekday mornings.
  • Walk all the way to the tea garden at the northern end: the Bosphorus view is worth it.
  • Leave before the evening closing time; the park is closed at night.
