The story of the street
The street takes its name from the small Ottoman fountain (soğuk çeşme, “cold fountain”) at its head. On one side rise the high outer walls of Topkapı Palace, and on the other a row of attached wooden houses. In the 1980s, led by Çelik Gülersoy, president of the Turkish Touring and Automobile Association, the houses were rebuilt faithfully to the originals and painted in pastel colours. Today some of the houses are used as guesthouses. A Roman-era cistern on the street has also been restored.
Walking the street
Start your walk beside the Fountain of Ahmed III and walk down along the walls. At the end of the street you reach the Alay Köşkü entrance of Gülhane Park. The whole street is a few hundred metres long; walking downhill is easier with children.
Visiting tips
- The best time for photos is early in the morning; the street gets crowded during the day.
- Because the houses are used as guesthouses, be quiet in front of doors and windows.
- After leaving Topkapı Palace, walking down this street to Gülhane Park makes a lovely walk.
