History of the han
The han was built by Kösem Sultan, mother of Murad IV and Sultan İbrahim, with its income to be spent on charity. Used mainly by Iranian merchants in the Ottoman period, it was one of the centres of the silk and cloth trade, and it even contains a small masjid for these merchants. Part of the han sits on top of a tower surviving from the Byzantine period.
Visiting the han today
Through the han’s gate you first reach a small courtyard and then the large inner courtyard. Weaving looms and metal and silver workshops operate in the rooms under the arcades. This is not a museum but a working place: respect the craftsmen’s work and do not take photos inside the workshops without permission. The han’s roof is famous among photographers, but it is not an official viewing terrace and has no railings; for safety reasons we do not recommend going up, especially with children.
What is nearby?
The han is on the road between the Mahmutpaşa Gate of the Grand Bazaar and the Spice Bazaar. Going downhill you reach the Rüstem Pasha Mosque and Eminönü.
Visiting tips
- Visit the han while walking downhill from the Grand Bazaar to the Spice Bazaar.
- Respect the people working in the workshops; ask before taking photos.
- Do not go up on the roof: it is not an official terrace and has no railings.
