Bazaars and hans of the Historic Peninsula: from the Grand Bazaar to the Spice Bazaar

5 places Last updated:

Since the 15th century the Historic Peninsula has been home to one of the largest covered markets in the world. The Grand Bazaar, the hans around it and the market streets running down to Eminönü, the spice scents of the Spice Bazaar, the Arasta behind the Blue Mosque and the Book Bazaar for book lovers are all here.

The bazaars are mostly closed on Sundays; weekday mornings are the quietest time. In the crowds, keep hold of your children’s hands and agree on a meeting point.

Bargaining and shopping tips in the bazaar

  • Do not let a shopkeeper wrap an item before you know the price; compare a few shops.
  • Bargaining is normal for expensive items such as carpets, leather and jewellery; food such as spices and Turkish delight usually has price labels.
  • Card payment is common, but small shops may offer a discount for cash.
  • The Grand Bazaar has dozens of gates; note the number of the gate you came in through.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Grand Bazaar open on Sundays?

No. The Grand Bazaar is closed on Sundays and on the first days of religious holidays. The Spice Bazaar is open every day including Sunday (except on holidays).

What should you buy at the Spice Bazaar?

Turkish delight, spices, dried fruit, nuts, Turkish coffee and tea are the most popular. In the Hasırcılar market just outside the bazaar you can find more local prices.

Can you go up to the roof of Büyük Valide Han?

The han’s roof is famous for its view of the Golden Horn and Süleymaniye, but it is not an official visitor site: it is a working han, and access can be restricted from time to time.
