Why Seraglio Point matters

According to legend, Byzas of Megara founded the city in the 7th century BC on this hill where three waters meet; the Byzantine acropolis and later Topkapı Palace rose on this hill. The Turkish name of the headland also means “the palace’s point”. In the seaside park stands the Atatürk statue by the Austrian sculptor Heinrich Krippel, unveiled in 1926; it is the first Atatürk statue in Istanbul.

The view and the walk

From the headland you can see Üsküdar opposite, the direction of the Maiden’s Tower and the Bosphorus Bridge, and on the left Galata and the mouth of the Golden Horn; children love watching big ships enter the Bosphorus. The nicest way to Seraglio Point is to walk through Gülhane Park and go down past the Column of the Goths. From here you can continue walking along the Marmara shore on the Kennedy Avenue seaside promenade.

Visiting tips

  • The coastal road (Kennedy Avenue) has heavy traffic; cross only at pedestrian crossings and underpasses.
  • It can be windy; take a light cardigan in spring and autumn.
  • At sunset, photos from the headland looking towards the Golden Horn and Galata turn out beautifully.
