A short history of Sultanahmet
Sultanahmet was the administrative centre of ancient Byzantion and then of Constantinople: the Great Palace of the Byzantine emperors, the Hippodrome and Hagia Sophia all rose here. After the conquest, the Ottoman sultans built Topkapı Palace on this hill. The neighbourhood takes its name from the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, built between 1609 and 1617. Sultanahmet is the centre of the area added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985 as the “Historic Areas of Istanbul”.
